Bird Food

6th December, 2010 - 10:08am

snowycrabapplesThe birds have been going mad on the feeders these last few days; poor things are struggling on a daily basis to stay alive. The berries in the hedges have been well feasted and are looking a little battered and the blackbirds had started feasting on the crab apples hanging in their hundreds from my tree.

They look so beautiful now in the snow, covered in a dusting of icing sugar like Christmas baubles on the tree.

Lots have now been eater and I’m sure many more will drop off for the ground feeding birds to feed upon.
I should have made them into jelly (the crab apples not the blackbirds) but I’m quite glad I didn’t now, as the bird’s needs are greater than mine and they may provide some vital sustenance for all manner of creatures that are struggling in the cold weather.
I must remember to stock up on some bird food to make sure my feathered friends have plenty of sustenance for the weeks ahead. I’m going to make sure I buy husk free food this time to cut down on the mess, but more importantly so they don’t have to exert any more energy getting into the seeds that they need to eat.

I didn’t realise how much effort this required and anything I can do to make their survival more likely is worth doing.
