Coldframe

8th October, 2010 - 8:45am

upright-coldframeI’ve been sorting out the cold frames this week. There are a few pots of apparently empty compost in there, which may or may not have bulbs in. Note to self – make a better job of labelling things next year.

The cold frames have worked hard this year and as a result I have several pots of very healthy, established cuttings, which I love to share with friends when they visit.

Some of them may need some extra protection over the winter, but a good layer of fleece and bubble wrap should do the trick for most and those that are on the tender side can simply come into the greenhouse.

Space shouldn’t really be a problem as I have three cold frames and a very large greenhouse, but I always still manage to fill them up.
There’s a certain amount of room needed for pots, trays and planters and they often end up under the greenhouse benches or in an empty cold frame but it’s not ideal.
I can’t bear to throw anything away that might be useful and I hate waste and landfill anyway, so there is always a battle raging in my head about what to keep, where to keep it or whether to throw it away.

I was really pleased to see another new range of biodegradable flower pots being launched at the recent trade show made from bamboo, I’m not sure how much energy it takes to make them, but presumably less than their plastic counterparts and at least they can pass out their days on the compost heap when they have done their job.
Seems they will last three or so years, so here’s hoping.
