Flying Bees

22nd February, 2011 - 9:59am

crocusbeesweb1Spring has sprung and the garden and greenhouse are bursting with new life. I’ve found yet another great reason for having a greenhouse, helping the bees.

All the pots of crocus I’ve been nurturing for weeks are now in flower. A few weeks earlier than they would be outside and these are now providing pollen for my bees.
The bees are flying now on sunny days looking for pollen and nectar and every plant that flowers in Feb becomes a precious resource.
My crocuses were buzzing with bees collecting the pollen and returning back to the hive.
It’s a bright orange colour and so it’s easy to see which returning bees have benefited from the greenhouse grown plants, even though they are now out in the sunshine for easy bee access.

Some bees have gathered a paler greeny yellow pollen, which I think, is from the hazel trees around the woodland next to my garden. I just hope they are getting enough nourishment from it all and that they will be OK.

It’s made me look at what’s in flower now and what’s coming up soon. The species tulips are showing their colour and the witch-hazel is still in flower too, but that’s just a few flowers. I’m hoping that the gardens nearby have plenty of things to keep them fed, the fact that they’ve come through the winter makes me realise these are pretty resilient little creatures and although I am a sort of guardian, they don’t need my help as much as I’d like to think they do.
