Greenhouse Leaves

peachleavesIt’s not just the garden that gets swamped with leaves in the autumn. The greenhouse has started to form its own carpet of leaves. My peach tree (still waiting to be planted) has dropped its pretty leaves to the floor in a botanical hissy fit and it’s not the only one.

Trouble is, unless I remove every dead leaf from the greenhouse quickly every single one has the potential to grow a crop of fungal fuzz that will spore and overwinter attacking anything it can at every opportunity.

Ventilation is so important in a winter greenhouse and on sunny days the temperature can zoom into double figures quickly, after all that’s the whole point of a greenhouse, to take advantage of the solar energy throughout the year.

Fortunately my lovely greenhouse is fitted with automatic vents that will open according to the internal temperature and this helps to regulate the glasshouse on days when I’m not around or am too busy to venture out several times a day.

It’s a godsend really and something that every greenhouse owner new or experienced should fit.
I am sure it’s saved hundreds of pounds over the life of my greenhouse and it certainly gives me peace of mind all year round when I can’t give the greenhouse the full attention it needs.

The pizza base insulation is proving a great success and something I intend to spread around the greenhouse, that may take some time as I rarely eat the things myself, but it seems to be working well.
