Greenhouse Peaches

19th July, 2011 - 1:29pm

Regular readers will know that my greenhouse peach has been a real star this season. The early spring blossom was a joy and an amazing source of nectar for my bees.

Every day I moved it out of the greenhouse and onto the patio to be pollinated and at night moved it back into the protection of the greenhouse.
The bumblebees and honeybees did an amazing job and before too long there were dozens and dozens of pea sized peaches on every stem.

Then in June many of the little fruit aborted in the normal June drop leaving forty or so fruit to develop.
They are now the size of small apricots and a gorgeous blushed pink in colour. I must admit I thought they would swell a bit faster, but I’m hoping they will be ripe soon.
I need to keep a close eye on them as we have plenty of wasps around, which are already eating my raspberries. I’d really like to be able to eat and share the first peach harvest.

It’s another great way to make the greenhouse productive and another fabulous crop for the kitchen.

It’s been such a success that I’m thinking of adding an apricot to the collection for next year.
