Been potting up the tomatoes this week. I’d grown about six different varieties, which are now germinated, and growing well, but as I don’t heat the greenhouse I don’t tend to sow the indoor varieties early as its too cold.
I cheated a bit and bought some ready grown plants from the greenhouse and now these are potted up into very large pots of compost and growing well. In fact one plant has it’s first set of flowers already.
I’m feeding them with a general, organic feed until they are setting fruit, and then I’ll convert over to a tomato feed that provides the correct nutrients needed for fruit development.
It’s an exciting time in the greenhouse, but it is still cold at night, so it’s really important that any tender plants, including the tomatoes don’t get a chill. I’ve placed mine on an insulating layer of wood with a sheet of polystyrene between the greenhouse wall and the pots.
There are some Tagetes seedlings forming their first set of true leaves ready to pot up, and these will remain in planters near the tomatoes to deter the dreaded whitefly. It works a treat, they hate the smell and I have to say I’m with them on that.
Although the flowers are really pretty, I only grow Tagetes as companion plants to my greenhouse tomatoes.
