It’s probably safe to turn the outside water back on now the weather has improved. This would give me water inside and outside my greenhouse, trouble is I haven’t fixed the tap yet and really it needs replacing rather than fixing I fear.
This means that every drop of water I am using in the greenhouse for my newly sown seeds is being transported from the kitchen, up the garden to the greenhouse manually.
It’s not a major issue yet and at least it allows me to water my seeds and seedlings with slightly tepid water, but since I sowed another eighteen pots of seeds at the weekend it won’t be long before it becomes a problem.
Greenhouse irrigation is such a vital part of greenhouse gardening.
It’s not a good idea to water delicate seeds and seedlings with ‘raw rainwater’ as this can harbour all manner of fungal spores and problems that will have a party in the clean seed compost in the absence of any competition.
So it’s another thing on the ‘urgent to do’ list.
In the meantime I have employed six one litre milk cartons and a cardboard wine carrier which they fit neatly into and it is this that ferries my precious greenhouse water to sustain my baby plants.
It’s working so far and maybe the exercise will do me good!
