Honey Berries

29th April, 2010 - 1:00pm

honeyberryAs a garden writer I get to trial, test and even taste some pretty diverse things. Last week I took delivery of some honeyberries from Suttons. http://www.suttons.co.uk/honeyberry. I have to be honest I’d never heard of them, but they are actually a special form of honeysuckle with edible berries.

Please don’t eat the normal honeysuckle berries, as these are poisonous!

The Honeyberry has separate male and female plants so to ensure that you get a crop of fruit you obviously need a plant of each.
Suttons sells its plants as a duo with a male and female plant in each pot. They are ideal for containers and grow into a 5ft bush with fruit forming in May.

These plants may fruit a little this year, but should have a heavier crop next summer. I’m quite excited by them, the fruit looks delicious and they are supposed to be easy to grow.
