Hummingbirds, Snakes and Hosepipes

17th July, 2010 - 12:48pm

butterflyhawkmothI’ve been watching a hummingbird hawk moth flitting around the lavender bushes outside my office window today. It’s almost too hot to go outside, but this little creature is thriving on the nectar flow and managing to get enough energy to sustain its furious flight and feed itself despite the heat.

The greenhouse is like an oven, and since I saw a rather large grass snake slithering out of it last week, I’ve been a bit wary about venturing in there in the heat of the day.
I know it won’t hurt me, but it is still really freaky sharing your garden and greenhouse with snakes and as we have adders too, I have to look carefully before I scream.

I’ve been watering the tomatoes in the evening, but it’s almost a twice-daily task now and I’m wondering whether I’m going to need to set up an automatic watering system in the greenhouse.
Not too sure if I’ve got time to go away this summer, but if I do, it is probably the best solution and it looks like micro-irrigation systems may at last be immune from hose pipe bans. Hallelujah! At last logic prevails!
