Identity Crisis

3rd June, 2010 - 9:00am

sparrowhouse-webIt’s been an exciting week one way or another and even though I’ve spent a few days at the hottest gardening event on the planet, something closer to home has put a huge smile on my face.

Arriving back from Chelsea, even in the dark the first port of call is the greenhouse.
Once I’ve checked that everything is OK under glass and that all the seedlings, cuttings and plants have sufficient water, it was a quick run round the garden next morning that revealed the reason for my grin.

The Three Terraced Sparrow Nester from Wildlife World
(01666 505333; www.wildlifeworld.co.uk) positioned on the front of my Eco Shed (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/gardenprojects/6945278/Build-your-own-eco-shed.html) was chirping. I could hear the sound of hungry chicks crying for food and it’s a sound to lift anyone’s heart.

As I weeded the asparagus bed and checked on the newly planted raised bed, the little chicks were singing away.

Despite some undercover work I still haven’t quite worked out what sort of chicks are maturing in the safety of this sparrow box, but I do know it’s not sparrows. I’ve seen a flash of yellow and a splash of black but no blue, so I believe it’s a nest of Great Tits.
When I know for sure I’ll let you know.
