I’ve been thinking about how to start this blog for a while now. It shouldn’t be an issue as I’ve been writing about gardens and gardening for years. But all of a sudden it feels different, like I’m writing a diary entry or even a letter to someone I know
Not long ago the garden was completely buried under about eight inches of snow. It looked absolutely magical but as soon as it melts the damage beneath will become clear. It was a great excuse to spend some time in front of the woodburner with the seed catalogues, plotting and planning what I want to grow this year.
There’s nothing better than growing plants from seed, you get great value for money and have plenty of plants to share with other gardeners. But for me it’s the process of transforming a tiny brown speck or bean into a vigorous young plant. I never cease to be amazed at the magic of nature and how every detail of the parent plant is encased in such a tiny capsule and then nurtured into a new plant.
I’ve always got big plans for the garden in January, and this year is no different. I’ve got four fairly substantial raised beds where I grow my vegetables and this year they need to be more productive than ever before. Sowing will begin in earnest as the weather warms up, so my next tasks are to ensure the greenhouse is ready for all my new plants and that the raised beds are weed free for the start of the season.
With the new gardening season about to start in earnest, don’t spend all your time indoors on the computer, get outside every day and do something in your garden.
