Living Larder

cucumbersOne of the things I most love about having a garden is coming back to it after a few days away. Even in that short space of time the garden has changed. Usually the weeds have taken over, they always seem to advance significantly each time.

At this time of year everything grows so fast, so the tiny cucumbers in the greenhouse are now ready to eat, the cluster of tomatoes just starting to turn are now ripe and the salad has made a bolt for Mars.

There’s enough in the garden to make several meals without having to venture out to the shops, the only thing that’s really missing are the eggs, but until I replace the hens that the fox ate, we won’t be harvesting home-laid eggs for a while.

I love the living larder of the garden. It’s wonderful to pick something fresh to eat and there’s nothing better than eating what is in season within a few minutes of picking it.
In fact snacking on raspberries and tomatoes as you wander around the garden and greenhouse on a warm evening has to be one of the best memories of summer.
