It seems a bit weird that as we harvest this year’s onions and garlic we are already planting them again for next year’s crop, but I’ve been given some autumn planted onion sets and some garlic cloves and both need planting now.
I don’t want to plant them in the same place as the last crop, as there may be some soil borne onion pests or diseases, so I need to find a new patch to plant them.
It’s important to give them plenty of growing time, so I plan to plant half in the garden and to plant the others into small pots of compost in the greenhouse. It will be interesting to see the difference next year.
This year’s onions and garlic have been lifted and are drying off in the greenhouse.
Greenhouse staging is a great place to dry off some crops before storage.
I also like to ripen a wooden tray of tomatoes under the rays of the autumn sun, but under glass so that they stay warm and dry.
A regular check makes sure that any that are showing signs of bruising are used quickly and the others kept for use later.
It works well.
