I didn’t get back to my garden until pretty late on Saturday, but it was still light and as always the first check when I’ve been away is on the greenhouse and the animals.
All were well fed and watered and looking pretty perky, but the greenhouse was just getting crispy round the edges. By that I mean that the compost in many of the pots and modules was starting to dry out. At this time of year I use loam based John Innes compost. It drains well and is easy to rewet quickly and I really do prefer it to heavily based peat compost. Of course that’s a political hot potato these days and something us gardeners are going to be continually canvassed about.
I am environmentally aware and I do want to do my bit to save the planet and I am aware of the importance of precious habitats such as peat bogs and I’m happy to do my bit even if it means changing my gardening habits BUT I’d really like to see less peat burned in power stations as well. Gardeners can make a difference by choosing peat free compost and reduced peat compost, but they also need to feel that other uses of peat are being addressed and reduced too.
