Spent most of the weekend potting up seedlings and cuttings in the greenhouse. But first I had to make some space, because every tray of modules equates to at least two or three times the space of potted on seedlings and to be honest the greenhouse staging, benches and floor is pretty full.
So the remaining pots of runner beans went out into the open cold frame to harden off.
The extra pots of salad that I had sown back in April were planted straight out into the garden. The peas and mangetout that arrived mail order from Gardening Direct and Suttons Seeds were planted out in the new raised beds, along with the Oriental salads.
The cabbage, cauliflower, purple sprout broccoli and kale were planted out under mesh to keep the cabbage white butterflies off.
I even managed to plant out lots of summer flowers, cosmos, cerinthe and verbena Bonariensis are now in their flowering positions all around the garden. Plus I also planted out some cuttings of verbena and a lovely perennial Diascia.
This then enabled me to some space to pot up my chilli peppers into larger pots, some tomatoes that had been hidden behind a few pots of runner beans on the greenhouse staging and repot into their final pots some grafted tomatoes that I am trialling.
I felt a bit guilty because some of these plants should have been repotted as soon as their roots filled their current pots, but sometimes life gets in the way and the greenhouse has to take second place. Anyway, the seedlings and cuttings are now languishing in pots of very fresh and fertile compost and placed on self-watering trays around the greenhouse.
There’s still a fair few plants that need rehoming into larger pots, but they will all be dealt with as the week progresses.
