It might not surprise you to know that my favourite colour is purple. So when my mangetout started to form beautiful rich purple pods I was very pleased.
It’s a new variety from Suttons Seeds (www.suttons.co.uk), called, not surprisingly, Mangetout Pea Purple Podded.
The plants have grown a bit taller than I expected but they are podding well and they look fantastic in salads.
The leaves taste pretty good too and I’ve been harvesting them here and there to add to the salad bowl too.
Trouble is that I’ve planted them a bit too near to the beehive and the raised bed is right under their flight path so I have to wait until dusk to pick them or I end up with bees in my hair! Pretty but not to be recommended.
