Return of the Sun

26th January, 2011 - 11:53am

garden_sunsetHave you noticed how the days are getting noticeably longer? I have. It’s really starting to make a difference in the greenhouse and the garden. I’m able to spend a bit longer in the greenhouse before I have to put the lights on and I get to see a bit more of the garden.

The sunsets have been really beautiful these last few days and despite the chill in the air the signs of spring are really noticeable.

My witch hazel is in full flower and looks really beautiful, the snowdrops are up and some of them are flowering and the bulbs are starting to push through the soil.

In the greenhouse everything is starting to show signs of regrowth and new life.
The over wintered cuttings are sprouting new shoots and leaves, the bulbs are growing strongly and some look like they will flower. The potted peach’s buds are fattening up and the winter salads are looking distinctly tasty. I think I’m going to hold off sowing seeds for another week or so, despite the temptation.
My time is better spent cleaning, tidying and preparing the greenhouse for the season ahead and making sure I am ready for the onset of spring.

There’s still a lot that needs to be done in the garden too, but finding enough spare time to attend to everything is proving tricky this week, so since the greenhouse is getting ahead and making the most of any warm spells my time is better spent underglass than in the garden.
