Seed Shuffling

seed-packetsSince I’ve been stuck inside I’ve been finding a few things that need to be done that I’ve put off and off. One of those is to sort through my seeds. I seem to have seed packets all over the place.

I try not to keep them in the greenhouse, as they need a cool dry place to keep them at their best. In the summer the greenhouse is too hot and of course at the moment it is too cold to store seeds.
This means that they have all been brought indoors and have been stashed in various places around the house and my office.

The last few days I have gathered them all into one place and started to sort them into flowers, herbs and vegetables and then into sowing periods, so that I don’t miss a growing opportunity.
I’m not sure I’ll start sowing in January, but I do have a large electric propagator so I may just sow a few to get things started as early as possible. With such a cold winter, I want to get spring started as soon as possible.

Sorting through the seeds is useful as I can see a few gaps that need filling. I don’t seem to have any bean seeds. I’ve sown the broad beans already, but I’d like to grow some more in the spring and this year I’m going to have an early and a late crop of French beans, climbing French beans and runner beans galore. That means I need to order some more seeds, a lovely job for Christmas and one that I can take plenty of time over.

I’m bound to get carried away, who can resist all those lovely pictures of pretty summer flowers, tasty spring greens and summer vegetables and the thought of perfumed flowers to transform your garden. I know I can’t.
