Slug Control

14th April, 2010 - 4:51pm

slugIt seems my endeavours to seek out the slug eggs have missed a few. Some silvery trails around the peripheral pots of seedlings are the tell tale signs that something slippery still lurks in the greenhouse.

No surprise really, but I am not going to allow my newly sprouted seedlings to become fodder to a mini army of slugs.

So here’s my dilemma, I don’t like killing things and I believe that most creatures are the food source for the next creatures in the chain. But then again, there aren’t too many hedgehogs and other predators lurking in my greenhouse to eat the little fiends.
I also want to be as self sufficient as possible. So I have decided to employ a light sprinkling of Organic Slug Pellets in the greenhouse. Growing Success has a formulation based on ferric phosphate, which biodegrades into the soil. I’m not very happy about using them, but they are certified for organic use and I don’t believe any slug predators get into my greenhouse which is probably why there is a problem in there anyway!
