Snail Harvest

23rd November, 2010 - 3:40pm

snailEven at this time of year it’s essential to try and pop into the greenhouse on a daily basis. I don’t always manage it, but it is vital to try so that you can keep an eye on things. With the temperature yo-yoing but erring on the cold side I’ve been trying to remove dead leaves, spent flowers and anything else that might perpetuate botrytis and other fungal problems.
I’ve also been collecting snails.

There seems to be a never-ending population of little shelled creatures in there that are planning to feast on my greenhouse crops.
I don’t especially want to kill the things, so I’ve been collecting them up and putting them outside.

It’s a strange occupation, a little reminiscent of picking tomatoes but I’ve not yet been tempted to eat one. I have been quite surprised how many I have found and as I am fairly sure they can’t get back in again, I think there may have been a successful breeding programme inside the greenhouse this summer.
There certainly was plenty for them to eat.

The other strange thing is that I did use some organic slug control around my winter salads and the pellets keep disappearing. Something is eating them and heavens knows what.

Maybe it’s the snails??
