Snow Watch

5th December, 2010 - 9:58am

snowycoldframeSnow has been forecast for days and we’ve watched the weather maps avidly as a trip to London looms. This week the fluffy white stuff has fallen covering the garden, the greenhouse and the whole of the village in a thick, cold layer of snow.

It looks beautiful, but it’s very inconvenient as it may hamper our plans and cancel our trip. I haven’t ventured into the greenhouse for a couple of days preferring to keep any modicum of warmth that may still be inside, in there.

Everything is covered in fleece, bubble wrap and stood off the ground, insulated in some way or another from the cold rising. Fortunately I watered it all this week, keeping things just barely moist so the plants don’t dry out completely and die.
It’s a balancing act though.

Looking through the glass everything looks fine and protected in there, so I’ll leave well alone for now.
The cold frames are covered in a thick layer of snow but the plants look fine and not in need of any attention, so I’ll leave them to fend for themselves for the time being.
It’s just a case of checking on them regularly and dealing with any issues.
Fingers crossed that the snow doesn’t last too long and that the temperature doesn’t plummet any more.
Last year we had minus 15, which was extreme and did a lot of damage in the garden and even in the greenhouse.
