Sow Easy

25th March, 2010 - 12:00pm

sowing-seeds3I’ve held off a bit with seed sowing so far this year as I always seem to start everything too early and then simply run out of space to house it all in the greenhouse until the frost has passed.

Today I had a bit of a play in the greenhouse and started to sow some more seeds. My broad bean seedlings are quite strong now and it’s time to plant some more, but I’ve also been sowing some salad seeds to keep us in fresh lettuce for the spring and summer.

Normally I just sow the seed on the surface of the seed compost and then thin them out when they germinate. But I’ve got some new, coated seed, Gro Sure that makes the seeds easier to handle. This means I can sow just five or six to a pot, or into modules and reduce the need for thinning. The coating is designed for better germination too, so it will be interesting to see how they grow.

Anyway, now I’ve started that’s it. The temptation to sow just another pot or two will be too much and soon the greenhouse staging, all its windowsills and probably the floor will be covered in pots and pots of seedlings all vying for attention, water and potting on.
