Those seeds that I planted in my greenhouse on Easter Sunday are already starting to sprout. This morning, the spring sunshine lured me out into the greenhouse nice and early, even before I switched on the computer.
It’s so peaceful and still in the garden at that time of day and the only sound is the birdsong and the breeze in the hedges. I think that there’s something very magical about a seed bursting through its hard brown coat and growing roots and shoots.
I never fail to be amazed that these little brown specks hold all the information needed to create accurate copies of the plant they need to be. In just over 3 days there are already strong shoots sprouting from the Cosmos, Calendula, rocket and salad seeds that I sowed.
They are growing in pots on the greenhouse windowsill, protected by some bubble wrap that I have placed against the glass to provide some shelter from the cold nights.
It won’t be long before the rest follow suit and the staging, cold frames and floor will be covered in pots, planters and baskets all waiting to be moved out into the garden.
Isn’t it funny how we gardeners spend so much time wishing the year away? I am so guilty of that. First it’s the hankering after spring, and then when spring is here I want the last frost to have passed so my plants can be planted safely outside.
