Tomato Jungle

5th July, 2010 - 9:35am

tomatoesWow the greenhouse is just full of tomato plants and by the weather we’ve been having I’m very hopeful to get a bumper crop off them this year.

I don’t have any ripe ones yet, but it won’t be long.

My tomato twins from Suttons have trusses of little plum shaped tomatoes on them and I’ve got fruit setting on most of the others too, so it is an exciting time in the greenhouse.
I spent most of the weekend potting them up into bigger pots of Organic Vegetable Growing Compost from Westland.
It’s been boosting them into growth and they look fantastic.
I think there must be almost twenty plants in the greenhouse and my Growmate and I’m hopeful it will be a good year for chutney.

Tomatoes love the warm greenhouse conditions but do like some humidity so I’ve got them on self-watering trays that I fill daily or even twice a day when it’s really hot.

The water evaporates keeping the greenhouse atmosphere humid and helps keep the plants happy.
Larger pots of compost don’t dry out as quickly as small pots, plus there’s lots of compost to support the developing roots. I’ve been feeding them all with a dedicated tomato food and they are positively thriving on it.
