Garden wildlife has gone a bit mad in my garden this year. It must be a sign that the winged fraternity has accepted my organic status at least. Not only have I got bats and a huge variety of birds in the garden, plus of course my honeybees, but there is also at least one bumblebee nest, two wasp nests and we’ve had a hornet’s nest too.
The wasp’s nests are a new discovery. One is under the patio and totally out of reach, fortunately we have two areas where we like to sit, so we have chosen to use the other one.
The second wasp nest was a bit of a surprise as it’s under the overhanging eaves of the garage.
I hadn’t seen them building it, but now it is the size of a football.
I can’t call pest control, as all they will do is blast it with persistent chemicals that will affect my bees and the natural balance.
So they will have to take their chances, it does mean that I need to watch my bees carefully as wasps can rob a beehive if the colony is weak.
I don’t think my colony is weak, but I am not letting an army of wasps steal their winter honey stores.
Hmmmmm.
Never a dull moment in our garden.
