What no Easter Eggs?

1st April, 2010 - 6:00pm

eggsIt’s Good Friday tomorrow and it really brings home the fact that there won’t be any fresh eggs for Easter in my home this year. Well not from my hens anyway!

I’ve since found a few feathers, the only sign that my hens may have met an untimely end and the fact that they never came back home. So the hen house is empty, the garden is quiet and the dog has got his dignity back.
Not for long if I have my way, there are still thousands of ex battery hens out there that need a new home and I’m already planning a new, foxproof chicken run to keep them safe.

It snowed today! I thought it was an April fool’s joke from above, but it was true.

The garden was covered in a thin veil of snow and the temperature has plummeted. I’m totally fed up with the weather. It’s too cold to go out into the garden and only just about warm enough to be in the greenhouse if the sun is out. The cold will have checked the growth of the seedlings that were coming along nicely. The species tulips that were about to flower have flopped over in the garden and in the coldframe and it’s just so frustrating. Spring was late enough already. It’s April. We should be basking in spring sunshine as we weed, feed, plant and sow, not laying the fire to keep warm. This had better be a precursor to a fabulous summer, or I’ll have something more to say on the matter.
