Wildlife Weekend

20th June, 2010 - 9:11am

fat-lizard1webYet again it’s been a weekend of wildlife experiences in my garden. I live adjoining an area designated as a wildlife sanctuary. It’s renowned for its butterflies and dragonflies and as a knock on effect we get a wide variety of amazing insects in the garden.

I’m not a butterfly expert, but I must learn a bit more.
This weekend there were red admirals and orange tipped butterflies feeding on the nectar in the flowers. It was lovely and sunny for most of the weekend.

But I was still surprised to find a very ‘fat’ common lizard sunning itself on a railway sleeper down the garden. We have a healthy population of common lizards in the garden. It’s an amazing privilege and one I suppose I do take for granted now.

What was fascinating is that this little lizard appeared to be pregnant!
So pregnant in fact that you could almost count the eggs bulging down her abdomen (assuming they are eggs of course.)
So that’s another family of creatures that we know of being reared within the boundaries of our garden.
I’d like to think its because we garden with nature here, avoiding the use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers and keeping areas of the garden wild for the wildlife.

Whatever the reason it’s a wonderful insight into nature and a great opportunity to learn more about the huge biodiversity of creatures that live and breed in our gardens.
